Aptronics makes a strategic move into open source space

28 February 2005

Ubusha deal one of the biggest BEE acquisitions in SA open source space

Aptronics, a local fully integrated corporate IT solutions and service provider, has just announced that it has acquired a majority stake in Ubusha Technologies, a leader in the open source market in South Africa.

Aptronics, which is very strong in the deployment and implementation of solutions, was looking for a partner that was equally strong in the open source consulting arena.

This is according to Appie Pema, MD of Aptronics.

“Ubusha, which has significant experience and expertise in the open source solutions space, and also is a Novell Platinum Partner, with strong BEE credentials, was an obvious choice for us,” Pema points out.

“Together, Aptronics’ deployment capabilities, married with Ubusha’s knowledge and skill in the open source consulting space, will create a strong synergistic team, ready to provide the highest standard of consulting and implementation to the local market,” Pema continues.

The deal, which sees the majority shareholding in Ubusha (previously owned by WMS Holdings) being purchased by Aptronics, is one of the most significant BEE developments ever to take place in the Open Source space in South Africa.

This is according to Marius Agenbag, MD of Ubusha.

“This is because Ubusha is committed to being a leader in the management services, identity management and resource management space, utilising open source technologies wherever possible,” Agenbag explains.

“One of Ubusha's primary goals since its inception was to constantly increase the BEE portion of its shareholding. This deal sees Ubusha reaching a vital milestone in its development, with the majority of its shareholding now held by a black empowered partner,” explains Agenbag.

Ubusha staff hold the balance of shares in the company.

In terms of the motivating factors for this deal, Agenbag says shared goals and values were key. “For some time now, we’ve been seeking out a black empowerment partner that shares Ubusha’s passion for delivering service excellence to the South African market. With Aptronics we have found that common goal and a very natural fit in terms of Aptronics’ vision of increasing its footprint in the service delivery space,” Agenbag continues.

Pema and Agenbag agree that the synergy between the two companies also suits their mutual plans for future growth; since Ubusha now finds itself with a partner that is very strong on service delivery; and Aptronics supports Ubusha’s open source vision wholeheartedly.

“Our goal going forward is to be the leading and most innovative BEE IT services company in the South African market, providing full service solutions to business problems.

Together with our latest acquisition, subsidiary company Ubusha, we will continue to strive at maintaining our status as a sought-after company to engage with, making a long-term commitment to the South African IT consumer,” Pema concludes.
